Exploring the meanings of a square, circle and triangle with the result of a piece that asks people to question their perception of how they interpret the world.

I explored the idea of a given meaning of words and how it is our duty to question their viability in the case of change. Looking at the same from different perspectives to encourage discovery and exploration of new concepts. My pieces below explore the concepts of a circle, square and a triangle.

[circle coded outcome]

As a university assignment we had a task of interpreting the meaning of a circle. I decided to play with the meaning and incorporate an idea of inception, where once you magnify the points that create a circle, the points themselves will be seen as circles. As a final result I coded a looping visualisation within Processing.

[square animated outcome]

I was introduced to the perception of space and elements within it, with Gestalt psychology and Samuel Beckett's play 'Quad'. Looking back at Beckett's play, I found an interest in how space had power and significance and decided to experiment with the translations by attributing the meanings of a list of given words to specific spaces. I created an animation in Adobe After Effects, where 20 words are translated into visually defined spaces through motion.

[triangle coded outcome]

Looking into the mathematical meaning of a triangle, I found out it is used as mathematical notation for a difference or change. I combined my previous experiments of defining spaces and the idea of change to create an experimental code where a person can experience how differently you can navigate through spaces. I created a coded outcome in Processing, made up of two parts that work on a user's input of the mouse movement and an output abstractly showcasing the mouse’s motion.
